After becoming a pop-culture sensation as a teen, and after nearly a decade of trolling the world at large, the California rapper has blossomed into his maturity and seems to be embracing the role of a serious artist. Once Odd Future coalesce (one young member, Earl Sweatshirt, was sent away to boarding school because his mother did not approve of the music he was making), they will be unstoppable. There's a vulnerability, a neediness from Tyler in this performance-and in the album as a whole. This concept starts to make sense as the themes of overblown (fantasised) violence, poor luck with women, and family problems emerge over the course of the album – what better things are there to talk about in therapy? Tyler also proclaims over and over that his music is not for anyone but himself, a complicated paradox (which some might simply call hypocrisy) that has him appearing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon while simultaneously blocking his record label from promoting his album.īy introducing the concept of rap as therapy through expansive, rambling tracks (that are admittedly a bit too trying on the patience to be played repeatedly), Tyler has certainly set himself apart from the endless sea of new young rappers. In fact, the whole album is pitched more or less as a session with his therapist, a demonically voiced alter ego who tries to reason with Tyler. He is already analysing his own fame – asking if he is really worth all the hype and not ever proclaiming himself to be the best rapper alive (which may be the one hip-hop tradition he has overlooked). At 20 years old, he has garnered worldwide fame by mixing brutality with playful adolescent jokes and references to pop culture (Dawson’s Creek, really?). Goblin is founded on hip-hop traditions, but Tyler brings a lot to the rap game. He prefaces Radicals with a ‘random disclaimer’ that instructs not to do anything he says in the song, and yet halfway through the track he starts dropping honest philosophy – ‘Stand for what the fuck you believe in, and don’t let nobody tell you you can’t do what the fuck you want.’ He then transitions from the blunt, playful refrain of ‘kill people, burn shit, fuck school’ (the content he was warning against) to the more honest and nuanced ‘fuck your traditions, fuck your positions, fuck your religion, fuck your decisions / They’re not mine, you gotta let ’em go…’ Unfortunately, Tyler can get ahead of himself when he gets into self-referential, meta type statements. It is the listener’s job to parse out the messages and to put them into the correct categories. Sewn into Tyler’s bravado are insecurities about his public image, yearnings for female companionship, and, strangely, honest-to-God inspirational bits of advice on how to live life to the fullest. Although he does not directly talk about race or social class much, Tyler mentions here and there that his father was absent from his life, a regrettably common hip-hop trope that reflects the breakdown of the nuclear family in poor, urban, African American communities. Hell, there is even the ‘object of my affection’ song Her which, with its strong, detailed narrative and sparse production can be traced directly back to Biz Markie‘s Just A Friend. There are the misogynistic and violent tendencies – raping a pregnant woman and calling it a threesome, ‘kill people, burn shit, fuck school’ – that are a classic throwback to Eminem. There are the suicidal themes that come to a head on Yonkers – Tyler hangs himself in the video and simply announces ‘Dead!’ at the end of the track – that are a direct homage to Biggie Smalls. Although he claims to have odd influences (he shows mad love for teen heartthrob Justin Bieber on his Twitter account), Tyler still hits all the classic hip-hop targets on Goblin. Goblin is the brainchild of Tyler, the de facto leader of the group and a hip-hop sponge. However, this is not an Odd Future release per se. Now, after the fracturing of many groups during the great fall of the major record companies, along comes Tyler, The Creator leading Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA), a clusterfuck of Los Angeles teenagers and early twenty-somethings hellbent on speaking their piece. RZA did it with Wu-Tang Clan in the ’90s as gangsta rap was taking off. He did it with Public Enemy in the ’80s when it was much more common. Chuck D, one of the godfathers of hip-hop and a progressive, intellectual musician who embraces the power of new technology, suggests that one of the best things new rappers can do is to form a group.

One reason someone might not reply to an email is that they aren’t able to help, or don’t feel comfortable following through on your request. “Are you able to participate in our conference panel on Women in AI next quarter?”.“Do you have some time to talk in the weeks ahead about my development priorities?”.“Would you be willing to make an introduction to William Burns?”.“Is there a time in the next week or two that works for you?”.Your questions might sound something like: In fact, you are 50% more likely to get a response if you ask up to three questions than no questions at all. This means that if you’re forwarding your initial email, your follow-up message should be even shorter. Research shows that between 75 and 100 words is ideal, yielding the highest response rate at 51%. The most effective messages are short and easily scannable. No one likes to receive a long or dense email. Subtle flattery - without going overboard - helps. This would be a big win for my team and I, so we appreciate you sending any thoughts you have by EOD Thursday.” The former is neutral and could potentially be construed as demanding, whereas the latter is slightly more upbeat and appreciative while also being complimentary to the recipient. Think of your message as a gentle nudge. Imagine receiving an email that says, “Please send your feedback on my project by Thursday,” versus, “Given your experience with these types of projects, I’d love to get your feedback on the work I’ve done so far. Research shows emails that are slightly to moderately positive in tone have a 10-15% higher response rates than more neutral messages. Tone can easily be misinterpreted via email, so take care to craft a message that sounds friendly and polite. You might say, “Next steps on X project” or “Question on job application.” Be mindful of your tone. Instead, use the subject line to give the recipient a short preview of your request. Avoid generic phrases like “Following up” or “Checking in.” Those are not only vague - they may also make the reader feel bad for being slow to respond (even further delaying a prompt reply). Though not every email will be urgent, like Paul’s, you still need to be thoughtful about your subject line. Paul emailed his coworker again, changing the subject line to “Time sensitive: communication plan,” and got an immediate reply. His first email, with the subject line “Team communication plan in advance of firm announcement” didn’t get a response. Research shows that shorter subject lines with only four words have the highest open rates, which makes sense since two-thirds of emails are read on mobile devices.įor example, Paul, a client of mine, needed his colleague to sign off on a communication plan around the announcement of his move to a new group. Have a compelling subject line.įorty-seven percent of emails are opened or discarded based on their subject line alone. Here are some key things to keep in mind when you reach out to someone for the second (or third, or fourth) time. That said, it can still feel awkward to follow up, especially if you need to do so more than once. Remembering this can help de-personalize their silence, and make you less hesitant to send a follow up message. Your email probably doesn’t make the top 10 on their priority list. People are often juggling a series of important work and personal responsibilities. Whether you are reaching out to a coworker, a client, a recruiter, a classmate, or even an old friend, not everyone will get back to you on your timeline - if at all.Īs frustrating and disappointing as it may be, a lack of response doesn’t mean they’re ghosting you. You email someone asking for a conversation, information, input, or an introduction, and you get no response. The idea is that $9.99 sounds like a better deal than $10.00. That’s because consumers generally prefer to pay less for products, and often associate prices ending in a nine with discounts or bargains. Indeed, many studies have shown that odd prices-especially those ending in the number nine-are far more common than round numbers, which end in zero, in marketplaces around the world. You wouldn’t know it from a trip to the grocery store or a stroll through the mall, though. The most plausible explanation is that people simply prefer round prices. Those percentages are far too high to be random and, given the straightforward nature of the electronic payment, can’t be attributed to people’s dislike for handling small change or adding up different denominations of cash. Here’s the most striking statistic: 57 percent of consumers picked round, whole-dollar amounts ending in zero, and an additional 4 percent chose to pay round, half-dollar amounts. More than 65,000 purchasers in 104 countries paid anywhere from a penny to US$150 for the game. To celebrate the first anniversary of the physics-based puzzle video game, the developers invited people to download the World of Goo for any price they wished using PayPal. It’s not often that something called ‘‘ The World of Goo’’ has anything to teach business managers. Managers should consider consumers’ overwhelming preference for whole-dollar amounts when setting prices. Bottom Line: Despite the prevalence of 99-cent stores and $1.99 price tags, consumers appear to favor round numbers when paying for goods and services. |
